I had never heard of the author of "Coaching the Artist Within", Eric Maisel before, but I was reading another terrific book called: "The First Five Pages" by Noah Lukeman, which has a quote by him. I was reading at my local library, so I looked up Eric Maisel and took out a couple of his books.I liked "Coaching the Artist Within" so much that I decided to buy a copy for myself so that I could highlight and underline and make notes in it.
When I took the book home from the library, my wife expressed interest in reading it after me. So when my book came from Amazon, I gave my library copy to my wife to read and I started reading my copy from Amazon. The next day, my wife told me that she wants her own copy of "Coaching the Artist Within" by Eric Maisel - so she too can mark it up and make her own notes in her own copy as well!
So my wife and I have found it to be a book that we can really get into, a book that we can really study and appreciate.
The text part of each chapter is very relevant and the exercises are very appropriate. I found this to be very helpful in my specific area of creativity, but it applies to a wide spectrum of creativity.

I suffer from what I like to call, "Artistic ADD". It was with this in mind that I ordered the book, Coaching the Artist Within, to help me stay focused and address the problem areas in my creative life. Eric Maisel's breathing technique alone is worth the cost of this book and much more! I use his technique in many different circumstances and my youngest daughter recently started using it before she sings in public.
My life has made a lot of changes for the better since reading this book and I owe a lot of it to the Eric Maisel's strategy.
Eric Maisel is always able to enlighten the journey of an artist. He leads you on a journey of self-discovery- and back to your own work! I've found every book of Eric's to be a great help. This book- "Coaching the Artist Within" is another gem!!
His advice always seems to apply to my life. I love the concept he offers in
Chapter Six Creating in the Middle of Things. If I were to wait for my life to align with my creative urges, I'd never accomplish anything. His advice really validates my efforts.
I'd recommend this and all of Eric's work to help you on your journey of creativity.
This is one of the best "self-help" books I had ever read! Eric Maisel knows what he is talking about when it comes to creativity, and he knows how to explain important points and issues, with humor and sensitivity. After reading this book, I feel like I know the guy, and he is a great guy! His stories are relevant and instructive. Eric does not ramble, or waste words. Everything he says has a purpose and a goal. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I am re-reading it again - for fun, it was so interesting! "Coaching the Artist Within" has a permanent place in my book collection - in fact, it is with me in my art room when I make art!
I was sort of burnt out on self-help books, having read about a zillion of them in my lifetime, but Eric Maisel was recommended to me by a writer whose work is spectacular (Brown-Davidson) and I trust her judgment and needed a push to break through some creative blocks I've been experiencing. I have to tell you, I was quite impressed and definitely moved to get back to my novel after reading this very intelligent, and well conceived book on coaching your own creativity. There are some very inspirational ideas, exercises, and concepts that actually work, and since I'm cynical about such rah rah stuff, I was quite taken that my mind acquiesced to trying them, and they worked. I'd recommend this to anyone who has need of a support system and someone in their corner to urge them on to creative productivity.
I stumbled upon this book in a store, started reading for two hours, and ended up replanning my entire morning. I decided to skip my afternoon plans, head to the gym, and keep reading until I was finished. I am not inclined to self-help books and am wary of pop psychology, but I also know what it's like to be a fulltime writer for whom success only occasionally equals calm happiness. I've always struggled to understand why I am most anxious just at the moments I should be celebrating. Maisel's thoughtful blend of psychology and philosophy are not just aimed at the person first imagining an artistic career, or the person who is "blocked" (though anyone with those problems may find this book very helpful, since Maisel is a kind but tough coach who insists his clients stop dancing around their problems).
At every stage, writers and artists hit new levels of the same old problems, including self-criticism, negative self-chatter, difficulty articulating discontent and finding the vocabulary and tools for creating a meaningful life. As with all self-help books, the tone and content of this book will either hit you wrong -- and feel fairly obvious and encouraging, but otherwise nonessential -- or it will hit you the right way at precisely the right moment, helping you find the discipline and mental strength that might take you to the next step in your own artistic evolution.
Finally, one of my favorite things about the personal asides and client anecdotes is that Maisel does not end on a saccharine upnote every time. He admits that some clients, some projects, some dreams will still fail-- at least in the conventional sense. Those stories are some of the best in the book.
