Usually, I read books by this author that are set substantially later. This one caught my eye, and then my mind, and finally, my heart. It is full of pain, although it ends in triumph. The characters sometimes seemed to be almost in hell, despite being quite nice people. The villain was sufficiently bad, but at the same time, I almost felt sorry for him. All in all, an excellent book.

Story had a slow start. Almost put it down. It got better. Like the others in the series better
Period details are vivid. Plot feels a bit awkward and ocasionally oddly out-of-period or anachronistic in characters' motives and dialogue. Fun read, in the main. JoBev's Georgian and Regency works feel smoother IMO.
Three love stories, involving three men and two women, move forward surrounded by medieval aristocratic machinations and the moral problems of regicide cum fraticide and adultery.
Very interesting story of how a husband who was thought dead comes home to reclaim his wife. What he finds challenges everything in him to untangle the changes that have come about and still uphold the customs and save his family too. Most of the book I thought it would not be possible, but hang on for the ride and see where it goes.
I have read several medieval romances over the years, but this one has achieved one of my two favorites. This unlikely medieval hero was the best character I have seen written. He was not big, strong, and burly, nor was he overly full of sensibility and insipidy. Good job! Actually, all the supporting characters were well developed. The plot and its pace was good. The historical accuracy was exceptional for this genre. It was there, but did not take over. I found the contrast between the hero's romance and his sidekick's romance delightful. It is like reading two stories for the price of one.
but this wasn't Jo Beverley's best work, in my opinion. She's a master of the genre and most of her books are 5 star treats for me. If you're looking for some of this author's best work, try her Mallorens' series or one of my favorite all-time historical romances — AN UNWILLING BRIDE.
And title..??.found Beverly with the arranged marriage of Rogue series. Love them all main characters so fully developed and stories just flow, all 14 or 15 of them. This one just drags on for me and stories just seem to meander just got so frustrated went to last chapter and epilogue to figure out what happened. Never done that before but this one just didn't catch my interest.
