This amazing collection of short stories is one of the most accomplished debuts I've read in a long time. These dark, twisty tales map clean lines to the human heart and leave the reader shaken at every turn. It's hard to single out favorites from these amazing stories, but "In the Event" and "All Through the House" stand out for me. "In the Event" is a devastating and tiny exploration of what happens to one man when the very worst case scenario happens to him and his dark night working through it. And "All Through the House", which closes the collection, is a shattering look at a terrible murder, outside to in. From first to last this is top-notch serious-minded fiction, and Christopher Coake joins a short list that includes Ethan Canin and Dan Chaon as a writer who leaves you breathlessly awaiting his next work.Tags : We're In Trouble [coake-christopher] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <div>This book begins with We're in Trouble, a suite of three stories that introduces its common theme: love darkening and persevering as it is tried by the cold fact of death. Happy to discover this author; great book!
take the phone off the hook, don't control nothing with the remote, be prepared to drag at work the next day because you absolutely won't be able to put this down until the 400 a.m. finish, and then the dang stories will be bouncing around in your coconut for days. yikes.
A magnificently written collection that will grab and hold you until the end. The characters vary and the viewpoints shift widely with each perspective. There's truly something for everyone to relate to within these pages. You may see versions of yourself or those arround you, but, even for the characters you've not crossed in your own life, Christopher Coake has an amazing way of leading you to care for them and empathize with them. It's a must read, but do so with the expectation of setting life aside until you've finished.
Reading reviews of Kevin Wilson's "Tunneling to the Center of the Earth" led through links to Christopher Coake's "We're in Trouble".....This author takes me to compelling mind-heart connections and in a manner that heightens my senses for all that we fail to notice....that invites attention to the untold story.
After reading the first three, I noticed his acknowledgements to four women (mother, sister, his late wife, and current love companion/wife?)......the 10 year anniversary remembrance of Joellen provides meaningful context in appreciating how this author cares about what he writes about.....The author's work generates thinking and feeling with memorable loading........impressive.......
While I didn't find every story particularly gripping or insightful, for those I didn't, there is someone I know who did so there seems to be something for everyone. The strength of these short stories is that the portrayals are so convincing to get us involved yet short enough to leave much to the imagination. The stories about the soon-to-be-guardian, the cancer patient, the mountain climber, the child on a road trip, and the sheriff were all powerful.
This is an excellent collection of short stories and I highly recommend them to anyone. As others have indicated, the stories are about love in different situations and different forms. While the stories can seem dark, they are beautifully written and some end on an upbeat note. Coake is a writer to watch. He's excellent with short stories and I look forward to seeing more of his work in the future. If this collection is an indication of what to expect from him, I'll buy everything he publishes.
Each story a gut-punch, this collection grabs you by the heart and squeezes until you cry. It's amazing.
