Another outstanding book from Andrea K Host! The story starts off with a nerve wracking scenario and never lets up. I found this book on the give away page at GoodReads and entered for it but couldn't stand the wait to see if I won (I didn't) and clicked straight over to the buy button on Amazon.Madeleine is like a lot of this author's protagonists - smart, capable, unique but not a super hero. She struggles with relationships, makes friends, and doesn't always know the right thing to do.
The book was getting toward the ending and I was wondering if it would continue into a sequel or the beginning of a trilogy but she wrapped it up. A stand alone book seems like such a rarity these days that I was almost in shock! The ending is a little abrupt but I like knowing the ending. But another Gratuitous Epilouge wouldn't be frowned upon. (Speaking of which - Cassandra could keep going for another 5 books and I would still want to know more!)
My familiarity with Sydney is next to nil but it didn't impact my enjoyment of the book at all. I imagine that people familiar with the area would feel even more immersed in the experience.

Imagine waking up to find yourself lying under steel, concrete and dust ... lots and lots of dust. Once your mind is able to focus, and you realize that something has gone very, very wrong, you must make your way through the rubble of what used to be the mall. How do you keep your wits about you and not panic as you make your way past blood, dead bodies, and debris?
I loved the way this book started. I think the author had a creative and wonderful world created for us to submerse ourselves into. It is probably one of the most interesting alien invasions I have read. Rather than your typical farce of aliens pretending to help mankind only to betray them ... rather than an outright slaughter of all humanity ... the world was basically crop dusted to transform the strong into something to be used for the alien's guilty pleasure.
This book is full of many interesting characters. I particularly enjoyed Noi and Pan. Noi, an Asian girl hell bent on keeping her new found friend fueled will fudge and cupcakes, has enough quirkiness to round out the rather dull leading lady (Maddie). Pan, a kid studying the performing arts was always full of drama and flair! Fisher I found very interesting in his stand-offish kind of way. But mostly I found myself wanting to be a part of this interesting group as a whole. Watching them plot, survive, and train to fight back was a very worth reading experience.
So why 3 stars? To be honest I am torn between 3 and 4 stars. So I will give it a strong 3.5 stars. While I loved the beginning of this book I found that it left me with more questions than answers. At times the book felt very rushed. I don't mind a long read when it's a good read .... and I strongly feel this book had the potential to be a good long read. I feel the author could have gone into much more depth and detail than she did. For example while I get that the alien race were getting their jollies off by using humans as pawns in their games, I would have loved to have had a greater understanding of the why and how of this. Theoden was the perfect opportunity for this alien race to teach the human race and vice-versa, however, the author chose not to and I find myself wanting MORE of this relationship between Theoden/Fisher and Maddie ... so much lost potential in that relationship alone that could have filled in so many gaps. And even more so when it was just Fisher left standing. It almost kills me that that whole menage-a-toi of possibilities was lost in this story. If I could advise the author anything about this book it would be to go back and play with these three characters and their interactions and get lost in it!
The nicknames also threw me off, especially since I listen to books on my kindle while commuting. I found this a bit confusing and distracting, and not necessary .... but to be honest, most people have nicknames in life, so I can not fault it too much.
Over all I found this book a very interesting and creative story. And while I find myself personally wanting more detailed information with a bit more penned plotting, I would absolutely recommend this book, and the author, to anyone who loves the dystopian/sci-fi category. I look forward to reading more of Andrea K Höst's work.

This was an interesting alien invasion dystopian that had a cool big twist near the end. Threads of friendship, romance, and loyalty were woven throughout. I thought it was a YA book until I got to a sex scene. Then I was like…what? and I wasn't sure. Not ultra-explicit, but it wasn’t fade-to-black, either. The pacing felt a little slow to me, but that could be partly because I was reading it in smaller snatches of time. Still, I did wonder about a few things Why didn’t the thick piles of dust knock out some of the electricity or contaminate the drinking water? How did a few days of rain wash away the HUGE drifts of lavender dust? It wasn’t just a light dusting—it had buried cars and stuff. I liked that the book was set in Sydney, Australia; that was fun.
